Explore the Marsh at DuPont Environmental Education Center
The DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC) is a gateway to one of Wilmington’s most remarkable natural spaces, connecting the city, river, and marsh. Located along the Christina River at the edge of the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, DEEC is surrounded by 212 acres of freshwater tidal marsh teeming with life, including Bald Eagles, Wood Ducks, River Otters, and Eastern Painted Turtles.
The center features panoramic river views, a 10-acre ornamental garden, and a quarter-mile accessible pond loop trail extending into the marsh. It also serves as the trailhead for the 5.5-mile Jack A. Markell Trail, connecting Wilmington to New Castle.
DEEC plays a leading role in DelNature’s RENEW program and is a proud member of the Alliance for Watershed Education.

Pond Loop
Enjoy a a quarter-mile handicap-accessible pond loop extending into the marsh, featuring educational signs and beautiful views of the Christina River.

Stop in our indoor nature center for an up close look at our Animal Ambassadors, most of which can be found right here in the marsh.
Hoot’s Hollow
Hoot’s Hollow is a free outdoor nature play area located at the entrance to the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, just steps from the DuPont Environmental Education Center. This inviting natural space features handcrafted wooden play structures, a towering owl lookout, and interactive nature exploration areas.
Jack A. Markell Trail
The Jack A. Markell Trail is a scenic multi use trail that connects Wilmington with New Castle while passing through the heart of the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. Running in front of the DuPont Environmental Education Center, visitors can walk, run, or bike along miles of paved trail with sweeping views of tidal marshes, wildlife, and the Christina River. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience one of Delaware’s most important natural landscapes while enjoying outdoor recreation year round.
